A German-born American landscape painting artist, best known for his lavish, sweeping landscapes of the American West. his tremendous popularity was based on his panoramic scenes of the American West. Among the last generation of painters associated with the Hudson River school. His reputation was made by the huge canvases that resulted from his several trips to the Far West. In obtaining the subject matter for these works, Bierstadt joined several journeys of the Westward Expansion. Though not the first artist to record these sites, Bierstadt was the foremost painter of these scenes for the remainder of the 19th century
